How Easily Can You Actually Leave?

We rank 26 destinations on the four levers that decide a real exit — tax treatment, cost of living, visa access, and livability — into one 0–100 score. Transparent method, owned data, no sponsorships.

How the index is built

The Escapability Index is the equally-weighted average of four 0–100 axes, each computed from the same sourced data behind our country guides — no surveys, no fabricated "freedom" scores, no pay-to-rank:

  • Tax — structural treatment of a resident's income: territorial or no-tax regimes score highest, worldwide-taxing countries with a US treaty in the middle, worldwide-without-treaty lowest.
  • Cost — the cheapest hub we track in the country, min-max normalized across all destinations (cheaper ranks higher).
  • Visa access — the lowest income bar among the country's visa programs we've mapped (lower bar ranks higher); countries with no mapped route score low.
  • Livability — the country's best hub by our composite Abroad Score (affordability, walkability, connectivity, safety, healthcare).
Estimated

A ranking, not advice. The index is a directional comparison built from indicative data; it ignores special tax regimes, your nationality and treaty positions, family situation, and lifestyle. It is not legal, immigration, or tax advice. Confirm specifics with a qualified professional before acting. Reviewed 2026-06-10.
