Kenya Nairobi: Africa’s Silicon Savannah for Tech Founders

Nairobi is Africa’s undisputed tech capital. M-Pesa (mobile money) was invented here. The city hosts offices of Google, Microsoft, IBM, and hundreds of startups funded by Partech, TLcom, and local VCs. For the bootstrapper building products for African markets — or simply seeking a low-cost, English-speaking base — Nairobi offers infrastructure that no other African city matches.

The Visa Options

Single-Entry Visa (e-Visa)

  • Most nationalities: $51 via evisa.go.ke
  • 90 days, extendable

Work Permit (Class D)

  • For employment or self-employment in Kenya
  • Requires a registered Kenyan entity
  • Annual fee: approximately $10,000 (employer-sponsored)

Digital Nomad — No Formal Program

Kenya does not have a dedicated digital nomad visa. Most remote workers operate on tourist visas or business visas. For longer stays, registering a Kenyan LLC and obtaining a work permit is the formal path.

The Cost of Living

CategoryMonthly (USD)
1BR apartment (Westlands/Kilimani)$300-600
Groceries + eating out$150-250
Transport (Uber + matatu)$50-80
Coworking (iHub, Nairobi Garage)$80-150
Health insurance (Jubilee, AAR)$50-100
Mobile (Safaricom unlimited)$10-20
Total$640-1,200

The Tax Structure

Kenya taxes residents on worldwide income at progressive rates up to 30%. Non-residents are taxed only on Kenyan-sourced income. The 183-day rule applies for determining tax residency.

The Tech Infrastructure

  • Internet: Fiber is widely available in Nairobi via Safaricom Home Fiber and Zuku (20-100 Mbps for $20-40/month)
  • Coworking: iHub (Africa’s original tech hub), Nairobi Garage, The Foundry, and Nailab
  • Banking: M-Pesa is ubiquitous. Equity Bank and KCB offer full international banking
  • Flights: JKIA has direct flights to London, Amsterdam, Dubai, Mumbai, and every African capital

The Safety Consideration

Nairobi has higher crime rates than Southeast Asian or Eastern European alternatives. Standard precautions: use Uber (not matatus at night), choose accommodation in Westlands/Kilimani/Karen, and avoid walking alone after dark in unfamiliar areas. Gated communities and apartment complexes with security are the norm.
