Georgia: The 1-Year Tourist Hack

The Republic of Georgia (Caucasus) is the undisputed king of bureaucratic arbitrage. It does not offer a Digital Nomad Visa because it doesn’t need to: citizens of 95 countries (including the US, UK, and EU) are granted a 365-day visa-free tourist stamp upon arrival. You can legally live, rent an apartment, and even open a bank account on this tourist stamp.

The Border Run Loophole

The 365-day stamp is resetting. If you stay in Georgia for 364 days, take a 2-hour marshrutka (minibus) ride to the Armenian border, walk across, buy a coffee, and walk back into Georgia, you are granted a fresh 365-day stamp. You can theoretically live in Georgia forever by doing one border run per year, completely bypassing traditional immigration lawyers and residency applications.

The 1% Micro Business Tax Regime

Living in Georgia on a tourist stamp does not exempt you from tax residency. If you spend 183 days in Georgia, you become a tax resident. However, Georgia offers the “Individual Entrepreneur” (IE) structure. If you register as an IE and your annual turnover is under 500,000 GEL (roughly $185,000 USD), you can apply for the “Small Business” status. This legally drops your income tax rate to a flat 1% on gross revenue. It is the cheapest legal tax setup in the Eurasian continent for freelancers and solo-founders.

Pet Import Logistics (From USA)

Georgia is highly accessible for pet imports. Coming from the US, you do not need a rabies titer test. Your pet requires an ISO microchip, a rabies vaccine (at least 21 days old), and a standard USDA-endorsed health certificate issued within 10 days of travel. Because there are no direct flights from the US to Tbilisi (TBS), you will transit through European hubs (Munich, Paris) or Istanbul. If you transit through the EU, you MUST comply with EU transit pet regulations (Annex IV certificate). Istanbul transit is generally less friction. Returning to the US requires the strict 6-month CDC rabies titer protocol, as Georgia is considered high-risk.

The Solution/Structure

  1. Fly into Tbilisi International Airport and receive the automatic 365-day tourist stamp.
  2. Go to the Public Service Hall (a hyper-efficient government building) to register as an Individual Entrepreneur.
  3. Open a premium bank account at TBC Bank or Bank of Georgia (requires only your passport and proof of address).
  4. Apply for the Small Business (1%) tax status at the Revenue Service.
  5. Manage your pet’s flight routing strictly through Istanbul (Turkish Airlines) to avoid EU transit headaches.

The Banking Compliance Shift

Historically, opening a bank account in Georgia took 15 minutes. Recently, due to the influx of capital from neighboring conflicts, Georgian banks have dramatically tightened AML compliance. While you can still open an account on a tourist stamp, you must now provide extensive proof of income (US tax returns, client contracts, Upwork history) to ensure your funds are clean.

The Final Deadline/Critical Rule

The 1% Small Business tax status applies to services (consulting, software development, marketing). It explicitly does NOT apply to passive income, crypto trading, or financial consulting. If you earn your income through crypto day-trading, you cannot use the 1% IE structure, and your global income will be subject to Georgia’s flat 20% personal income tax rate.

In summary, Georgia offers the lowest friction lifestyle setup in the world, provided your income originates from active freelance/consulting services to leverage the 1% tax bracket.
