Bolivia: South America’s Cheapest Residency Under $500/Month

Bolivia is the cheapest country in South America — and one of the cheapest in the world. A comfortable single lifestyle in cities like Sucre or Cochabamba runs $350-500/month. Residency is obtainable within 90 days through a straightforward process at the Dirección General de Migración.

For the ultra-budget bootstrapper who needs rock-bottom costs and doesn’t mind basic infrastructure, Bolivia is the endgame.

The Visa and Residency

  • Tourist visa: US citizens need a visa ($160, valid for 30 days, extendable to 90)
  • Specific Purpose Visa: For work, study, or investment — 1 year, renewable
  • Temporary Residency: Apply in-country through Migración. Requirements: clean criminal record, health certificate, proof of income or savings
  • Permanent Residency: After 2 years of temporary residency

The Cost of Living

LocationMonthly (USD)
Sucre (constitutional capital)$300-450
Cochabamba$350-500
La Paz$400-600
Santa Cruz$400-650

The Tax Structure

Bolivia uses a worldwide taxation system for residents. Tax rates:

  • Personal income tax (RC-IVA): 13% flat (but primarily applied to employment income from Bolivian sources)
  • Corporate tax: 25%
  • Foreign income enforcement: Minimal for individual remote workers

In practice, Bolivia’s tax administration (SIN) is focused on domestic businesses and formal employment. Enforcement on foreign-sourced remote work income for temporary/permanent residents is virtually nonexistent.

The Infrastructure

  • Internet: Tigo and Entel provide 4G. Fiber is available in city centers (10-50 Mbps). Speeds are the slowest in South America.
  • Healthcare: Private clinics in La Paz and Santa Cruz are adequate for routine care. $10-20 specialist visits. Serious cases require travel to Brazil or Chile.
  • Flights: Viru Viru Airport (Santa Cruz) has international connections. La Paz’s El Alto Airport is one of the world’s highest airports.
  • Altitude: La Paz sits at 3,640m (11,940 ft). Sucre at 2,810m. Altitude sickness is real and affects many new arrivals.
